This is a prime example of what is wrong with Science. Those in power dictate the research that gets performed. Research requires money. ‘We will give grants to those research activities that we are interested in.’

The Institution of science arose from civilization. So naturally it has evolved so that those in power get answers to questions they have about retaining power and control while spouting platitudes of how they are ‘helping people’.

They are educated. They understand. They know how ‘complex’ the problem is. They have your best interest in mind. ‘Don’t worry, we will take care of things for you, just keep running that race.’

If that isn’t enough, look at how much research money is spent in the Defense industry. Or how about the pharmaceutical industry? ‘We have a pill, we need to come up with the disease.’
